How to edit old postings with the WLW

The Windows Live Writer is a great tool for creating new postings but also for editing existing postings. Unfortunately the XMLRPC API doesn’t support to load ALL the previous postings but there is a way or better there is a plugin.

Download the WLWDownloader
Find the PostID of the posting you want to edit
Start the Internet Explorer and enter the following URL with your Posting ID
wlw://www.example.com/?postid=yourPostId

Finish

Insert Flattr Button

Do you know Flattr? Flattr is a social micropayment platform for bloggers. Users are able to pay a small monthly amount and then click buttons on sites to share out the money they paid in among those sites, sort of like an Internet tip jar.

If you don’t want to embed the flattr button on all your post or you can’t edit your blog theme maybe this plug-in is what you need. Just enter your Flattr ID and choose the display mode and the plug-in will do the rest.

Windows Live Writer CSS class Plug-in

Phillip Sumi created two very useful plug-in for the Windows Live Writer to format selected text through a CSS class because this is something you can’t currently do with the Windows Live Writer without switching to the source-code view.

Insert Quick CSS

The Insert Quick Css Plug-In is very helpful when you have to manage only one CSS Class which you can change through the Windows Live Writer option dialog.

Managing multiple CSS Class Names

If you have to manage more than one css class this plugi-in is the right one for you. After you setup the plug-in you have a list of css class you can use, just double-click the one you need and the plug-in is going to do the rest.

Insert Joomla! Live Writer extension

James Wright created a Joomla! Live Writer extension which work with the metaWeblog XML-RPC Api and give the Windows Live Writer the ability to embed the Read More link into Joomla!

The school where I work uses Joomla! for the school website, and we have been looking for a solution to enable our non-specialist staff members to update the site without getting overly burdened by the more technical aspects of what sits behind the page.

WLW bit.ly – trim your urls

WLW Bit.ly is a useful plug-in for who wants to use the short url service bit.ly for the outgoing links. If you are registered at bit.ly you can also insert your credentials and track all your outgoing links.

Bit.ly is also very SEO friendly. All URLs are forwarded by a 301 redirect passing all the link juice from your blog to the target URL. So you don’t have to worry about penalizing the sites you are linking to. WordPress fans who wants to track their outgoing links should take a look this Google Analytics Plug-in. It tags all your outgoing links automatically and many other stuff.

Hint: By highlighting the whole document with CTRL + A and then clicking the Insert WLW Bit.ly icon, the plug-in transform all URLs into short Bit.ly URLs.

Insert MP3 Player

The Insert Mp3 player plugin will let you add a small MP3 Player to your blog post. Options include, Let vistors Download MP3, set Width & Height of MP3 Player, Center Player in blog Post, Auto Start MP3 when vistor loads webpage. The plugin required the Quicktime code so you must be sure to install Apple’s Quicktime player to let the the plugin work properly.

WordPress sample plugins

Brandon Turner member of the Windows Live Writer developer team created a set of WLW plugins for WordPress to present on the Wordcamp in Seattle. The plug-in are only demos but Brandon would be happy if you could provide him some feedback.

Import twitter Status to tagline – It will look for your most recent status that is not an @ reply and doesn’t contain a link.
Comment management – This plugin allows you to manage comments on your WordPress blog from inside of Windows Live Writer.
Custom Field plugin – The custom field plugin lets you add WordPress custom fields to your blog (FINALLY custom field support!)

Insert Clipboard Capture

Usually when you insert an image from the clipboard the Windows Live Writer give the image the filename Image1, Image2, Image etc. With the Insert Clipboard Capture Plugin from Scott Lovegrove you can choose the filename without saving the image somewhere.

This plug-in is a great help if you are doing search optimization and you want to drive some traffic from the image search like google or bing. It will improve the rankings of your pictures of your blog.

Windows Live started an interesting poll about the Windows Live Writer.

It seems like Microsoft release a secret update for the Windows Live Writer. We think it is just a bug fixing version because we didn’t notice any new functions.

The strange thing is that the update isn’t available by the Windows Live Writer Updater. In fact you have to download it from the Microsoft download website.

Maybe the update is a good reason to reactivate the official Windows Live Writer Blog. The last posting was published in January 2009.
