Unable to login to Live Spaces with the Windows Live Writer

We’ve got some reports about people receiving error messages while they tried to login to their live spaces from the Windows Live Writer.

Solution: In same cases the Windows Live Writer seems to have a problem with long passwords associated to the LiveID, you can solve this issue by reducing the amount of characters of your password.

Temporary post in the Google Index

When you set up a new blog within the Windows Live Writer for the first time, the WLW ask you if you want to detect the theme. For the theme detection, the Windows Live Writer creates a temporary post with the Title “Temporary Post Used For Theme Detection (ID-ID-..). Normally after the theme detection the test post will be deleted automatically, but it seems it isn’t happening every time as a Google search shows.

Now what can you do to avoid Google from indexing this page? Simple check your blog and delete this pages. An easy way to find them is to use the search operator:

site:domain.tld "Temporary Post Used For Theme Detection ("

PS:You don’t have to worry about these temporary posts they don’t harm you or your blog they just look ugly.

Overwrite images problem

Geoffrey had the problem that every time he uploaded an image by posting a post the image overwrite the previous uploaded one. He asked the Windows Live Writer Developer team and they provided him with a workaround to fix the problem temporary.

Open HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Writer\Weblogs\{blog-id}\UserOptionOverrides\, where {blog-id} is a GUID. You will have several of these, but should be able to tell the right one by looking at the contents of the key.

Add a new String value with name “fileUploadNameFormat” (case matters!!) and the value e
{WindowsLiveWriter}/{PostTitle}/{Randomizer}/{AsciiFileName}

Heavy bug found in the Windows Live Writer

There is the possibility that the XML files that store a list of the tags can get corrupted and the Windows Live Writer isn’t starting anymore.

Joe Cheng form the developer team of the Windows Live Writer published a workaround if this problem is showing up.

Delete all files under

Vista: %AppData%\Windows Live Writer\Keywords\

XP:%UserProfile%\Application Data\Windows Live Writer\Keywords\

Incompatible: InsertVideo Plugin and Live Writer Wave 3

Scott has confirmed on his blog that the InsertVideo plugin doesn’t work hand in hand with Live Writer Wave 3. According to his statement, the Live Writer team had changed something in the API the plugin uses, so in result you’ll get the following error message.

He hopes that the Live Writer team will resolve the bug in the upcoming release.
